There is immense individual variation in terms of what people actually do in their inner lives in response to the same instruction.

Yoga Schools
However, most schools are based on the classical astanga, eight-limbed, yoga of Patanjali, which is defined in Sanskrit as yogas cittvrittinirodha, meaning: yoga is (yogas) the restraint (nirodha) of the modifications or whirlings (vritti) of the mind-stuff (citta).
Thus yoga is a stilling of the mind.

However,Nirodha in the teaching of Dependent Origination (as also in dukkhanirodha, the third of the Four Noble Truths) means the non-arising, or non-existence, of something because the cause of its arising is done away with.
DuringNirodha there is no time squence whether a couple hours pass or seven days, as the immediate moment preceding and immediately following seem as though in rapid succession, start and finish compressed wafer thin.
There is a sanskrit wordNIRODHA discribed usually as cessation that carries with it a more indepth meaning.

Within yoga we actually see a similar teaching “ Yogas Chitta VrittiNirodha ” Yoga Sutras of Patanjali B.1 s.2, Yoga is restraint of thought in the field of the mind.
Nirodha comes from the root rudh which means to ‘obstruct”, the prefix “ ni ” literally means lowness or downward motions.
Especially since many scholars consider the second sutra to be the most important sutra, and the rest of the book is written to deal with that one issue.

Thus the Buddha taught ' tassayeva tanhaya asesa viraganirodha ', that eradication, extinction of tanha is the truth of cessation of suffering.
Then, there is another form of cessation which comes about through meditating on the nature of impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and insubstantiality.
But the important point to note is that once the ignorance fades away, vanishes, all its resultant effects such as sankhara, etc., become extinguished.

All the living entities along with their conditional tendencies (vasanas) merge into the body of Maha-Vishnu to await another creation and another opportunity to take up the science of God.

The one step method is: Isvara pranidhanad va.1:23 (By giving your life and identity to God- you attain the identity of God).
Patanjali opens his discourse on Yoga by stating in the Samadhi Pada or the Chapter on Ecstasy that Yoga occurs effortlessly, when the mind has become purified and concentrated.
Here Patanjali provides the practical means of purifying and concentrating the mind, so thatnirodha is possible, for those who cannot surrender everything to the Lord.

Authentic yoga practice in turn cancels out and annuls (nirodha) these vrtti and then we are thus enabled to reconnect -- reuniting eternal spirit with our embodiment -- as a manifestation of living love in the present, thence it is said that we abide in our own true self nature (swarupa).
The culmination of yoga comes when all differentiations are obliterated innirodha or samadhi.
Later we shall see that Patanjali suggests tools as yoga processes/practices (called sadhana) which are designed to remove these fragmentary fluctuations of the mind (vrtti) by practices which remove the kleshas, samskaras, vasana, and negative karma.

Yoga Sutras: Chapter 3

Yes, yoga aims at eliminating (nirodha) the agitations and disturbances (vrtti) of the citta, but change or transformation (parinama) from a constricted and obscured state of consciousness to an expanded state of clarity is desirable in yoga.
Patanjali says in Samadhi Pada (chapter I) verse 3: "tada drashtuh sva-rupe'vasthanam" After the vagaries and disturbances (vrttis) of consciousness (cit) cease (nirodha), then Yoga is accomplished.
Thus meditation is a two way street i.e., the samskaras create the oscillations and permutations (parinama) of consciousness (chittaanvayo) which create the obstructions to meditation, but also meditation reverses the wave process (parinama) where the samskaras become annihilated (nirodha).

Applying various meditation methods/breathing techniques to attain 'yogas chitta vrittinirodha' can't actually get you there when your life has yet to be lived in full.
Yoga practice, be it meditation or hatha yoga, will always end and you will always find yourself walking down the street, going to sleep, looking outside, thinking about something...unless somehow there develops the understanding that in all of these things at all times, 'yoga' can occur.

In fact the //nirodha// (cessation) of //dukkha// (by means of the //nirodha// of craving) is the THIRD not FOURTH truth.
Regarding a varient of the Four Truths withnirodha as the fourth, I am rather dubious I must say.
The fourth truth is the Noble Eightfold Path which leads to the //nirodha// of //dukkha//.

In that state of meditation which has been calledNirodha, the mind has an uniform flow.
When the mind has overcome and fully controlled its natural inclination to consider diverse objects, and begins to become intent upon a single one, meditation is said to be reached.

Samadhiparinama, meditative transformation, occurs whennirodha is experienced not simply as a negation of objects of consciousness but rather as a positive meditation on nothingness.
Since this is the central aim of everything stated so far in the Yoga Sutras, sanyama received considerable emphasis from Patanjali.
Nonetheless, there is a single substratum, dharmin, which underlies all change, whether in consciousness or in matter, and this is prakriti, the primeval root of all phenomena.

All subsequent Sutras reference back to and develop the foundational depth of this one: yogash-citta-vrtti-nirodhah -- Yoga is thenirodha of the vrtti of citta.
The Yoga Sutras are a scientific documentation of the process of life, by which we as human beings who do have a choice, may accelerate our journey, by seeing the root cause of suffering, and choose to not reinforce it.

Again, it does us absolutely no good to merely accept this on faith (or as our faith).
When we get to the Buddha's prognosis for the human condition in his Third Noble Truth we see how far his teaching is from pessimism or fatalism, because he offersnirodha -- the transcending or cessation of duhkha -- as a very real possibility for all of us!
In seeing duhkha clearly (and this is why we should not be too quick to turn away from our suffering), and in truly understanding the way out from it, we cultivate the strong intention to let go of its causes.

The Buddha saw little to no soteriological benefit in these formless states of meditation.
Finally there is the last meditation, complete withdrawal or Attainment of Cessation (Nirodha Samapatti); In this state of ‘mindlessness’ (acittaka), close to that of coma and death, the practitioner has minimal heartbeat, respiration and body heat, and does not respond to external stimulus.

Thus Yoga is 'Yogashcittavrtti Nirodhah', ie theNirodha (channelisation) of all the Vrttis (propensities of mind).
In Yoga one has to do Vrttinirodha, and for Vrttinirodha one has to withdraw one's mind from the crude objects and direct it towards Parama'tman, then only suspension of propensities is possible.
Nirodha means to withdraw the vibrations (Gati or the propensities of mind) and to direct them to the objectless (Avis'aya), ie to withdraw the mind from the objectivities.

Of the four noble truths spoken by Buddha, the first says that some affliction is unavoidable and the second, that we will have reactions to affliction when it happens.
The third, nirodha, is that, for freedom’s sake and peace, when these reactions occur, practice containment.
Yoga is the containment [nirodha] of the modifications of the mind.

All of our sufferings according to Buddha, spring up from nothing but our ever- increasing desire, the desire to posses what seem to us pleasurable and to avoid what seem to us unpleasurable.
At last he became enlightened in one full-moon night under the Bodhi three on the bank of Nerunjara River, in the state of Magadha, when he was thirty-five years old, after spending six years altogether in search of truth.

The Pali term "nirodha" means "Nirujjhatia ettati nirodho" that in Nibbana all sufferings ceases, Anuppadoeva nirodho anuppada nirodho" means that in Nibbana, there is no state or nature of whirling in Samsara, i.e., total void of all planes of existences for one who has attained.
Therefore "nirodha" is meant in four categories: (1) in the sense of release from Samsara (nissaranattho); (2) tranquil peace (vivekatho); (3) unconditioned state (asankhatattho) and (4) deathlessness (amatattho).

For restraint is again a form of fighting, and even a momentary lapse of reason can force us to lose the fight/restraint; on the other hand, there is no fear of falling, as this Love Divine is of the nature of renunciation.
"Because it is of the nature of renunciation there is no element of desire in that Love Divine" - here "nirodha ruupatvaat" is translated as "of the form of renunciation" and not restraint.
Therefore, the next aphorism by Maharshi Narada will explain further the nature of 'nirodha'.

Nirodha: the cessation mode of the Dependent Origination cycle: cessation of ignorance => cessation of volitional impulses => cessation of consciousness...
Nirodha: ignorance ceases => volitional impulses cease => consciousness ceases => body and mind cease => sense bases cease => contact ceases => feeling ceases => craving ceases => clinging ceases => becoming ceases => birth ceases => aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain grief and despair cease => the cessation of suffering
This is why the process of the cessation of suffering, ornirodha, which is included within the Middle Teaching, is simply a description of impersonal phenomena and their interrelated functioning to produce the cessation of suffering.
